- Free and fair parliamentary elections were held in January, with all candidates for the legislature’s 16 seats running as independents. No women were elected, compared with one successful woman candidate in the 2019 elections. In February, former Attorney General Feleti Teo was elected unopposed as the new prime minister. He replaced incumbent Kausea Natano, who had lost his parliamentary seat.
- In August, the Falepili Union treaty with Australia—signed in late 2023—entered into force. Among other provisions, the treaty established a special visa pathway for Tuvaluan citizens to live, work, and study in Australia, while also requiring the two parties to agree on any future security or defense arrangement between Tuvalu and a third state. The latter provision was seen as a safeguard against Beijing’s growing influence in the region.
