Democracy is in retreat all over the world. More than one-third of the world’s population lives under dictatorships, and political rights and civil liberties have declined every year since 2006. Authoritarian regimes continue their crackdown on dissent, stifling political opposition, civil society, and independent media, and committing brazen acts of aggression against their own citizens. And, the world’s democracies find their own democratic norms and values under threat.

The Freedom House Democracy Defenders is a team of visionaries who commit to advancing freedom and democracy. By donating $1,000 or more, you stand alongside other dedicated Freedom House contributors who are committed to shining a light on threats to freedom and democracy and supporting frontline activists. Donors who give more than $10,000 will be publicly recognized.

All Democracy Defenders will see the impact of their donations through updates about the fight for democracy and invitations to exclusive briefings on Freedom House’s flagship reports such as Freedom in the World, Freedom on the Net, and on how we are tackling setbacks in some of the world’s toughest climates.
