The 2015 migration crisis in Europe has resulted in the creation of new barriers to not only Middle Eastern migrants, but also to migrants from the non-EU Western Balkans countries. Problems in these states, such as high unemployment and social exclusion, have previously been “exported” to the EU in the form of economic migration and through the asylum system. The brief explores what will happen now that this outlet is no longer available.
