The score reflects a highly restricted political and media environment where freedom of expression and assembly are severely suppressed, and digital activism or political mobilization efforts are highly restricted. Pervasive online censorship of political, social, and religious speech has significantly limited the diversity and reliability of the online ecosystem, and expressions of dissent or criticism of the government online or offline can draw criminal prosecution and imprisonment. The country is rated Not Free in Freedom in the World 2023, with a score of 18 out of 100 with respect to its political rights and civil liberties; and Not Free in Freedom on the Net 2023, with an internet freedom score of 28 out of 100.
